About the Authors

Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar. Robert and Daisy first heard these words in southern Mexico in 1990, and immediately adopted them as their mantra. Daisy had begun trekking long before, in her native Ecuador at age five, where she promptly fell into a quebrada. Little did she imagine how many more quebradas lay ahead.

Daisy's trail eventually led her to Montreal, Canada, for university, where she met Robert and his idea of traveling for "a year or so." Since their training in medicine and occupational therapy had prepared them for a rather different set of challenges, they continued their education at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Wyoming, U.S.A., before hitting the road. The year became two, and then four, and then more, as they traveled and trekked throughout Latin America—and acquired the new profession of travel writing along the way.

Having tasted the forbidden fruit of freedom, there was no turning back. Instead they broke trail on projects as varied as tourism programs in Antarctica and a radio program called Travel Latin America. Since 1993, Robert and Daisy have again made their home in Ecuador, from where they continue to travel, trek, and write. They are founders of the Latin American Travel Advisor, authors of Footprint Ecuador & Galápagos, and contributors to various other publications.

Robert and Daisy are always interested in new writing assignments and innovative projects. They are available to collaborate with researchers, cinematographers, scientists, and anyone planning a worthwhile expedition in Ecuador or South America. Feel free to contact them with your ideas, but please do not expect them to plan your treks or travels for you.

If you should end-up trekking with Robert and Daisy, be warned that they are notoriously leisurely on the trail. You might find them enjoying an after-lunch siesta in the páramo, or pondering the foggy way forward while mumbling their mantra: caminante, no hay camino...
